Kornelius Killburn Geargrave IV

This boss character for Turmoil was designed and partially created by myself and 5 other artists. 

Final Boss Image

References 

The boss, as described by the creative director, was large, mechanical, and intimidating. My initial designs were humanoid in shape, but after further discussion, the Creative Director favored a boss with more limbs.

Concepts 

From the reference images, I created a few sketches that highlighted different design elements of the references. The Creative Director specifically wanted the designs to be bulky and for movement to be easy to animate.

Blockout

The Blockout was created in Blender made of mostly subdivided spheres. This blockout was scaled to what the combat and level designers needed, and then the other artists were given access to the FBX file. This workflow ensures that the final pieces fit together and still support the initial shape language of the design.

Face 

I created the face for the model in Blender as well. Given more time, I would have explored better modeling techniques for creating smooth but ridged appearing faces.

Combining All Assets 

The boss was modeled by 2 other artists on the team. One artist was responsible for the legs, and the other worked on the torso. When they were complete, it was my responsibility to correct typology issues, combine the model, UV unwrap, and then Color ID for texturing.

The Final Model

Skeletal rigging, texturing, and animation were all produced by other team members. The final model was a collaborative effort between 6 team members. The Creative Director and Myself led the development of the boss. The model was completed in 1 month.
